The message

What does it truly mean to be woke?

Trey Knowles' Woke brings light to the meaning of spiritual awakening: obeying God's Word, living by His Spirit, recognizing sin, repenting, and walking in the light of Jesus Christ.

The song challenges listeners to look beyond popular definitions of "woke" and examine themselves according to the Word and Spirit of God. Its message is urgent: hearing truth brings responsibility, and spiritual awareness cannot be separated from obedience to God.

Being woke is not merely claiming awareness. It means walking by the Spirit of God. A blind person cannot lead another blind person into the light. Jesus teaches that when our spiritual sight is darkened, our whole life can be filled with darkness.

To be truly awake, we need light. Light exposes what darkness tries to hide and helps us recognize the difference between righteousness and sin, truth and deception, and good and evil. Jesus Christ is the true Light, and those who follow Him are called to leave darkness behind.

True spiritual awakening also reveals our own sinful nature. Woke calls people to repentance, spiritual discernment, obedience, and transformation. It is not about seeing darkness in everyone else while refusing to confront the darkness within ourselves.

The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is presented as a warning about rejecting righteousness and continuing in wickedness. The song asks a direct question: if someone continues doing and approving what God calls evil, what makes that person spiritually awake?

Romans 1:18-32 describes people suppressing truth through wickedness, exchanging God's truth for lies, and turning away from the Creator. Woke uses that warning to call this generation out of darkness and into the light of Jesus Christ.

Scripture focus: Romans 1:18-32

The song points listeners toward Romans 1:18-32 as a warning against suppressing truth, embracing spiritual darkness, and approving what God calls wicked. Its central call is to repent, walk by the Spirit, and follow Jesus Christ in the light.
